Some of these cedars, from 300 to 500 years old, grow out of the rocks along the bluff. We came to this trail because Vilander Bluff is the highest point over the Meramec River and we had just had epic flood here so we wanted to see how high it was – by the time we got there on Jan 2nd it had gone down a lot, but regardless, it was beautiful! WRWEO discourages camping on the Bluff Trail because of the harmful human impacts often caused by camping such as damage to trees and other plants and the accumulation of litter including toilet paper and human waste. Although The Bluff Trail is designed as a stacked loop trail, it is possible to access even the more remote loops without camping. The Goat Trail to Big Bluff is 5.9 miles roundtrip and has an elevation change of 1,076 feet.As you can see on the map above, as well as on the AllTrails page, the hike to Big Bluff is all downhill, which means that you’ll be going all uphill on the way back.
